You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. — Psalm 23:5b
This month, we’ve been focusing on nourishment, learning to receive what our bodies, minds, and spirits truly need. Sometimes nourishment looks like a slow meal or a quiet afternoon; other times, it’s spiritual, a moment when God pours out His love in ways that fill the dry places in our hearts.
Psalm 23:5b paints this picture beautifully: “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” It’s nourishment in its purest form: God tending to us with gentleness and abundance.
There’s something deeply tender about this verse. It’s not just about abundance, it’s about care. In ancient times, to be anointed with oil meant you were chosen, honored, set apart. The act itself was personal and loving: warm oil poured over the head, a symbol of blessing and belonging.
When I read these words, I picture the Shepherd leaning close, gently pouring oil over my weary head, soothing the dry and rough places, both on my skin and in my spirit. It’s an image of restoration. Just as oil nourishes and protects the skin, God’s presence restores and renews our inner lives.
Maybe nourishment in this season looks like quiet mornings with Scripture, a few deep breaths before your day begins, or a few drops of oil gently pressed into your skin as a moment of stillness and gratitude.
Take a moment to reflect:
“How is God nourishing me in this season? Where do I see His abundance overflowing in my life?”
Let your morning be a reminder that you are continually anointed. You are chosen, cherished, and invited to live from the overflow.
As we grow older, our skin naturally loses moisture and elasticity. It craves richness, a deeper layer of nourishment. Our souls are much the same. When we’ve walked through long seasons of strain, or when life has thinned our reserves, we need to be replenished. Psalm 23:5 reminds us that God doesn’t offer just enough. He offers overflow.
A Calming Skincare Ritual: Anoint Your Skin with Grace
Set aside a quiet evening or early morning.
Light a candle. Breathe deeply. Let this moment become your small act of worship.
Begin with clean, dry skin.
Warm a few drops of your favorite facial oil between your palms.
As you press the oil gently into your skin, whisper this prayer:
“Lord, may Your peace and presence anoint me anew.”
Move slowly, tracing gentle circles along your temples, jawline, and heart.
Imagine your soul soaking up the same nourishment and becoming supple with grace and rest.
